[ale] lpd weirdness

This has been driving me crazy. When I send a print command, I get this
error message:

lpr: connect: No such file or directory
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.

However, I am using the correct printer in my lpr request and lpd is
running. If I go in and kill the lpd process and restart it, then voila!
my print job comes rolling off the printer. Any ideas?
