[ale] silly X question

Ok this is probably very simple, but it's frustrating
the hell out of me.

I've just set up a slackware box running XFree86
4.0.2.  All the fonts are horribly aliased and look
blocky.

How can I fix this?  And, for that matter, how do you
set the default font X will use?
