[ale] "mkfile" ?

I'm looking at making a file, 256Meg or the like to turn into swap space
on an existing system. On my suns I can' just do a:
mkfile 256M SwapFile_01
Can Linux currently use a file on the root partition as swap space? Is
there an equiv to mkswap?
