In order to match the console and X11 (and in fact to not switch modes
between them) you must use a driver with KMS support. The Nouveau
driver allegedly has that support for NVIDIA chipsets.
If you'd like to use well-tested KMS support, I recommend getting an
ATI/AMD graphics card. The free software driver works great (I have
multihead support natively, in console, X11 and Weston on a Radeon HD
6400 series.
