I think you have enough pointers/advise already, so I'll start with a
"What they said".
I've got an ancient laptop dual booting an obsolete Winders and Ubuntu.
My recollection is that the original setup was a piece of cake. Get the
Windows partition shrunk so there is enough room to work, and install
Linux.
Of course, a second hard disk would be better, but not always possible.
And as always, perform a backup before trying anything fancy with your
disk system. No point in tempting the gremlins...
