macrovision is still used.  from what i had read the only way around was
to find a DVD recorder that allowed flashing with a modified BIOS.
although there are probably many different hardware alternatives.

for what i needed (birthday recordings, etc.) it wasn't an issue.
although i had thought it would be nice to eventually convert some of my
old VHS tapes (that are not available on DVD) to disk.  unfortunately, i
was pressed for time and opted for a midrange Wally World special.
