It's dependent upon the window manager you're using.  If you've got a 
window manager that is placing icons on the desktop, then there is 
actually an application that is overlaying your root window, thus the 
image is there, but hidden.  What you want to do is save the image and 
then select it as the background from whatever interface your window 
manager provides (kde, gnome, all offer an application for setting your 
background image).
