[ale] dual boot xp sp2 and any linux distro

has anyone else had a problem with service pack 2 and linux  dual boot. 
I was talking with a friend at work who just got his new comp working as
usual he installed win xp (with sp1 ) did the upgrade to sp2 and went to
install fedora core 2. when it came time to boot, grub did not load and
it went straight to window$
