At the risk of sounding blunt, you're attempting to push the envelope on a
platform (RHEL) that isn't intended for such. I can suggest two options,
and I'm sure others will have their ideas:

1. If, despite your recent headaches, you prefer the idea of installable
packages and you're using semi-proprietary software such as Oracle
and/or Java, you'll want to give Fedora Core 2 a try. They have a
very cutting-edge "development" branch that is somewhat analogous to
the old "Raw Hide" distro from Red Hat, so the packages in that
branch make at least some attempt to integrate neatly. Fedora is, by
charter, what the upcoming versions of RHEL will look like.
2. If that still doesn't provide enough cutting-edge, it's time to go
with a less stringent (package dependency-wise) distro such as
Gentoo or the "current" branch of Slackware (their latest "official"
    release is nine months old).
