I recommend Charlie Papazian's "Complete Guide to Homebrewing" as a starter text 
- lots of simple advice, a boatload of recepies, and a relaxed attitude.  After 
a few batches with that, you can move on to more detailed/clinical techniques, 
but that book is the best intro.
