rpm's will generally be faster, discounting the effort that might be 
required in getting all the dependencies straight.  That being said, 
SuSE Yast has nailed this one.  You don't have to worry about 
dependencies, it does it for you.

Compiling from source enables you to better target your hardware, thus 
could well be faster then the generic binary provided by rpms.
