I agree, me neither. But when I need this sort of functionality, jEdit does
sftp by default...

I've never really used them (I don't use ftp -- scp was invented for a
reason ;-), but there are macros, plugins, etc. which can add that. Check
this vim macro page <http://www.xs4all.nl/~josvanr/vim.html> for one
example....
