[ale] Building large scale intranets with OS solutions

I'm looking for information regarding building and implementing corporate
intranets with open source solutions.  If you have the experience, I'd
love to hear your recommendations in the following specific areas:

- books or urls that should be read
- web frameworks available that will make life easier
- caveats regarding either of the above
