[ale] moving directories

hey how do i rename or move a directory to a "invisible" directory? like
rename doc to .doc ? i tried just makeing the dir and then copying the
files but when i did 'cp * .doc' it said it needed a dir at the end to
copy files to.... thanks for any help :)
