[ale] Connection Speed

Hi there,

I am wondering if there are any tools (non gui) to monitor connection speed.
I just set up a PCTel modem (for poops and grins) and I want to see what it
is getting when I dail up. It is in a headless Linux firewal/router so it
can't be gui based - well it could be but text based would be cooler...

Better yet, does anyone know how to get this info? I would love to write a
neat little program for it :)
