[ale] wave editing

i understand how to copy music off of old LP's
and how to burn them on to CD's

is there software that anyone recomends for editing the wav files?
mostly i'd like to be able to clip off and seperate the songs into individual 
wave files.  a little tone and filtering to clean them up would not hurt 
either.
