[ale] OT: stateless 2nd tier

I am used to the 3-tier architect in which the second tier (logic) is
stateful.
Somebody just told me about a stateless 2nd tier. I just wonder we have
anybody doing client-server here, and could give me a brief discussion why
stateless 2nd tier can be useful. I can think of tons of reasons why it is
not.
Thanks.
