Unless you have a REAL good reason to use the stillborn cpio, use GNU tar!

The only reason cpio was created was because the versions of tar at the
time could not backup devices inodes (just storing the type and major/minor
dev numbers) and could not take a list of files from standard input.

It was rather easy for me to add these features to tar, hence SGI's
enhanced tar.  These features now are, of course, in GNU tar.
