[ale] using rdist on single host?

Anyone know how I can use rdist to copy one directory tree to another on 
the same host?

I know, I know, I could use cp or a tar pipe, but I need to remove files 
that no longer exist and I can't do wholesale deletes on the tree 
branches.  Doesn't rdist do a cleaner job of these tasks?  I just want to 
do it all on the same host and preferably without using network resources.

Any other ideas?  I could write my own perl script but why re-invent the wheel?
