You've gotta put the kernel boot sequence in VESA graphics mode, which is
accomplished by passing in a "vga=XXX" parm to the kernel, where XXX
represents the VESA-specific decimal representation of the graphics mode you
desire. In my case, a value of 792 puts the boot process in XGA mode.
