[ale] How to get hidden files into a tar archive?

When I tar up a directory for backups I usually do something like "tar cvzf 
filename.tar.gz dirname/*". Unfortunately, this does not get any of the 
hidden files (prefixed with a '.') which I need this time. Can someone tell 
me how to do this?
