[ale] system sleep during inactivity

greetings all,

my system will not sleep during inactivity even though cmos is set to
allow it to sleep.

is it now up to the os to initiate sleep?  

is there a setting?

a different screen saver is invoked every fifteen minutes, will this
keep the system from
sleeping?

any help is appreciated.
