[ale] Basic 'ld' question

ALEers-

When I use 'ld' to link a compiled object module against a library, is 'ld'
smart enough to link only those modules within the library which are
actually used?

I am getting what seem very large load images of a rather small piece of
cross-compiled embedded code.

All the compilers, tools, libs and application object modules were built
from 'egcs-1.1.2' and 'binutils-2.9.1'.
