[ale] sendmail doesn't start up

I'm running RedHat 4.0, on a box with a dial-up PPP connection to the
internet. For some reason, the sendmail daemon doesn't appear to start
up when I boot, even though sendmail.init is in the directory
/etc/rc.d/init.d/. I have to run it manually with

/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail.init start

after I'm booted up in order for it to start. I'm a little shaky on
UNIX system initialization; is there somewhere that I need to tell it
to start sendmail, which doesn't come configured by default in RedHat?

Thanks,
