It's probably the case that the 'every so often' you speak of is actually 
'when in insert mode'.  That is, the arrow keys may output A's and B's if 
you're in insert mode, but probably wont if you escape to browse mode...  
If that isn't it, I have no clue but I figured I'd offer my $.02...
