One thing you didn't mention is the type of stuff you need to print.
Misc office-type stuff? Photographs? Do you need color at all?

Brand doesn't mean much, unfortunately.

Pretty much any network-enabled printer sold today should JustWork(tm)
with Linux via IPP, without any client-side drivers.
But if you have more specialized needs, that changes the equation a bit.
