My grandfather was born in Chicago in 1886, and he still votes several
times in each mayoral election. But ifconfig is deprecated and will
sooner or later disappear. The ip commands are tricky, underdocumented
and hard to learn, but they work very, very well once you get them
right.
I can confirm that the shellscript I wrote about works with ip link and
ip addr, because that's what I used. I would assume that someone good
at ifconfig (and I was never any good at it) could do the same thing
with ifconfig.
