A few days ago Backblaze released their latest long-term reliability
study, and HGST drives once again were significantly more reliable than
everyone else.
On the other hand, Many moons ago I (and many others) had some of a
particularly infamous batch of "IBM Deathstars" as they came to be
known.
The moral of the story is that all manufacturers have their ups and
downs.

It's more a matter of the fact that those drives are explicitly
portable, and subject to all manner of abuse that an identical drive
installed inside a case would not.
