[ale] Linux-like gui text editor for MacOS?

Any recommendations on a good gui text editor similar to gedit on MacOS (preferably with tabs like gedit)? The ?TextEdit? that ships with the OS seems to maintain formatting (who thought it was a good idea to match the terminal background color when pasting from a terminal into the text editor?!) - and I want plain text only.  I usually open vim in a terminal window, paste into there, then paste back, but I know there is probably a better option.

Ideas, anyone?
