Quick fix:
Show original (from the "More" drop-down menu in the upper right corner of the message pane)

Automatically display email using monospace font: 
Settings --> Default text style  -->  font  -->  Courier New (or whatever you prefer)

AFAIK, there's no way in gmail simply toggle the display font back & forth between monospace & proportional, which is weird since most email clients have it built in.
