Thanks for the suggestions.  I've tried VLC, xine and mplayer.  So far
VLC and xine work (mostly).  I'll give kaffiene a try later.  After that
I'll have to figure out how to rip the DVD to the hard drive to speed
things up (machine is a Toshiba Satellite 1805 with a P3 1.0GHz but the
DVD drive is a bit sluggish.)  Installation went fairly smoothly, too,
with the only hiccup being the audio (forgot to open alsamixer to unmute
the outputs.)
