[ale] Free video editing software?

I just installed one of the downloader plugins, and it gives me several format choices.  Any suggestions of the best format for doing this sort of thing?

Firefox and Opera both have extensions which allow downloading (most) videos
on Youtube. One for Opera usually offers mp4 and flv as choices.
Occasionally HD versions are available as well.
