I used Cinelerra to compile some content from several DVDs to a highlights clip.
It worked very well for that.
Biggest headached I had was maintaining audio sync when I converted formats.

I've used it for a few projects recently, and it is pretty good. Just
make sure that you have a system that is "heavyweight enough" for video
editing---lots of RAM helps a great deal.
