We moved off Xen to KVM over the last 2 yrs.  I'm with you.

We were NOT using the paid Xen releases.

Since switching to KVM, no issues with kernel updates. ZERO.
Now I have different issues, but never with booting or stability. I'm still
happy with KVM 2.5 yrs later.
