I've been following this topic with some interest. I disagree on some points and agree on others. My contribution regarding Ruby is this.
If you're good at it, the DevOps ilk are paying top dollar for Puppet/Ruby types. I've had to learn just enough to get by to customize Puppet template files and the like.
If you get good, you can make some dough.
