[ale] unmount problem

If I plug a thumb drive into a usb port, I can open it and manipulate files 
without a problem.

BUT . . . .

when I try to unmount the thing, I am told that another program has opened 
a file on the drive and the OS refuses to unmount the damn thing.

I can not, for the life of me, figure out WHICH piece of software is the 
problem.  Right now, to guarantee safety, I am rebooting to unmount the 
thumb drive.  There must be a better way!  I thought dropbox might be the 
grimlin, but that's not it.

I have looked in /var/log/messages and used ps and top to no avail.

Clues would be appreciated.
