[ale] raid 5 drive sync = heat death of universe time frame

It would be such an improvement with RAID hardware to be able to tell it
"Hey! These are BRAND NEW DRIVES so all you need is a fast sync!".

But NO!!!! The system must confirm that all bits are in fact nulls while it
lays down format markers.

<sigh>really needed this system running 20 minutes ago. With x6 750GB
drives it'll be done syncing about 2 am.
