Have you tried simply uninstalling the catalyst/fglrx packages?
My son just upgraded to 12.10 and since he uses a radeon 4650, he called
me for advice when he this X version issue.
After I had him delete the proprietary drivers and reboot, it appears to
have worked just fine. The in-kernel radeon driver isn't your grandma's
chevrolet, so to speak.
