Thanks for the explanation and advice.  I'll definitely switch over.
What you say is clear and easy to find now that I know to look for it;
however, when I was setting up samba, it was not clear at all.  Google
search results and flags like "Canonical provides critical updates for
smbfs until April 2012" in Synaptic don't help clarify the difference
either.
