Gas prices are tied to the markets. Oil per barrel prices are traded. 
Speculation can cause gas prices to go up irregardless of supply/demand.

JDSU stock was traded up to $260 but a few years later was $1. So we all 
pay more according to how the hedge funds decide to trade.

When they decide to short oil, gas prices will decline.

There is a loose tie-in with news depending on whether the money wants 
there to be.
