[ale] VNC color problem with Ubuntu-9.04

When I open a 'vncserver' from my Ubuntu-9.04 box, I don't seem to have 
any color service ("black", "white", etc. undefined). This causes a number 
of applicatons to crash, and others to be mostly useless. How can I bring 
color service to a VNC session?

I had the same problem with different window/session managers; I'm 
presently running 'x-session-manager' which at least gives me readable 
menus.
