[ale] lost a cpu core

So researching this a bit more I see the following in /var/log/messages:

Mar 11 11:41:44 mac kernel: SMP disabled
Mar 11 11:41:44 mac kernel: Brought up 1 CPUs

So, the boot process knows what it's doing, anyone have any idea why 
it's doing that?
