There is a zeroconf-based instant messaging protocol for LAN-scoped IM.
If you do not need to leave the LAN (or, you will always be attached
to the LAN by way of a VPN), you could use that. Otherwise, your best
bet would be to set up an XMPP server (XMPP is the protocol that is
formerly known as Jabber) and get that going, in which case you can use
any XMPP client, which also includes Pidgin and Empathy.
The zeroconf IM protocol is called Bonjour. It appears to be
essentially a serverless XMPP that uses zeroconf to discover available
peers for discussion.
