[ale] OT: How different is z/OS from Linux/Unix?

OS/360 became OS/370 which became OS/390 which became zOS.  I think  
OS/360 was based on earlier platforms that were not considered  
"mainframes".  I learned to write 360/370 machine code back in late  
80's to diagnose the hardware.  Only IBM writes MVS code but I think  
people that call themselves MVS programmers write JCL (job control  
language) and know how to install and maintain MVS.

I used to know some guys who could look at the 1 and 0's that were  
saved at each clock cycle in the cpus and tell you what operation the  
computer was doing and if it was working.  Still blows my mind.
