A-ha!
There _is_ a side effect from this.
It breaks the scroll wheel in the terminal window.
For example, if you do NOT have the LESS environment variable set, and
you "man man", then (in gnome-terminal at least) you can use the scroll
wheel on the mouse to scroll the man page up and down.
However, if you have LESS='-X' set, when you scroll, you actually scroll
the terminal's scrollback buffer.
Aww, that stinks.
