[ale] sudden printer headache

Suddenly I can not send a job to my networked printer.
I can reach it via its web interface and get it to print
a test page.  But when I try to print from an application,
nothing happens.
Use KDE.  

When I open a text file and try to print with Gedit (Gnome
text editor) I at least get this indication:
/usr/lib/cups/backend/lpd  failed.

The file exists.

I am clueless.

This was working when Last I printed, before shutting down
everything for a vacation.

Hints would be appreciated.
