This does sound like a problem due to your color scheme. For me,
matching braces are turned from black to blue and my cursor always
inverts the background color. So if I have my cursor over a brace it
will have a black background and a blue foreground while the matching
brace will have a white background and a blue foreground. Much less
potential for confusion.
