Why the limitation on third party programs?
A search on freshmeat for dvd backup shows lots of projects, such as
scdbackup and multicd.
I haven't used it, but both Bacula and Amanda claim to support optical
media as backup targets.
If this computer has a graphical interface, I've read that latest
version of Brasero can split a project across multiple disks.
