At least these days, it's relatively easy to use NetworkManager to
quickly setup a PPPoE connection.

I do wish, though, that there were a way to move NetworkManager closer
to the "system" part of things, and have NetworkManager integration with
GDM such that one could create a VPN connection and do single-sign-on
over a VPN link before even logging in.  Oh, boy, would that make life
easier.
