[ale] Speakers on laptop not working

I am not able to get any sound from the speakers on my laptop. I am
able to get sound from speakers plugged into the headphone out, but
not the speakers. I don't think it is a software issue because I have
tried multiple OSs and I have the same problem in all of them. Anyone
ever experience something like this? Any guesses as to what could be
the issue? Speakers, soundcard, simple connection? The laptop is not
under warranty.
